2017 Great Race of Agoura Hills Recap

Nearly 6,000 runners of all walks of life participated in last weekend’s Great Race of Agoura Hills.  With something for everyone, this event was made for the whole family.  From half marathons to fun runs, veterans and novices alike were able to test their strength and stamina through the roads and trails of Agoura Hills.

RSAR Runners up early! (L-R: Jeff, Jan, Lisa, Lally)

Our eager RSAR runners (Lally, Lisa, Jan and Jeff) got up early on Saturday morning to make sure to secure one of the most important spots of the day… PARKING!  If you ever plan on running this race, make sure to get there EARLY!  We got there an hour and a half early and the parking lots were beginning to fill up.  *Tip: park at the Vons shopping center off of Kanan Road as it will be easy to leave as it is not affected by the road closures.  It is only a 10 min walk to the starting line from there.

Once we parked we proceeded up the hill to prepare (aka, use the potties before the race) for the races were were going to take on… Lisa, Jan and Jeff took on the Old Agoura 10K, while Lally took on the Chesebro 1/2 Marathon.  We worked our way up the hills of a beautiful Agoura Hills neighborhood along with all of the other runners.

While we gathered in the streets we were welcomed to smiles and music, reminiscent to a neighborhood block party.  It was great to see all of the friends and families gathered together, excited for the race to come.

After the National Anthem was sung and the runners given last minute instructions, the first wave of runners were off!  We cheered on Lally and the other half marathon runners as they ran down the hill to attack their course.  Once the streets cleared, it was our turn to get to work.  The 10K runners were sent off in two waves, to help space out the faster runners from the rest of the pack.

Off they go!

Both of the courses our RSAR team ran were filled with hills, trails, and beautiful views.  The Old Agoura 10K led runners through the streets and backroads of Old Agoura, while the Chesebro 1/2 Marathon added trail running through Chesebro and Palo Comado Canyon.

While we were working on our own races, there was also a second 1/2 marathon going on… the Pacific Half.  This race led runners from Paramount Ranch, through the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, to finally meet with the rest of us at Chumash Park.

If you think having three races going on at the same time was enough, think again!  The day’s festivities included the Deena Kastor 5K, the Kids 1 Mile Run, and the Camp Kinneret Family Fun Run.  All of the races finished at Chumash Park where we all powered through the finish line and were awarded with some heavy (it really is heavy) duty bling!

To help celebrate everyone’s accomplishments and cap off the races, it was time to party at The Great Brunch!  We were treated to music, post-race snacks and beverages, vendor booths, and even a rock climbing wall!

For our RSAR runners, this was definitely a new experience.  Not only were the courses challenging, but the added bonuses and schwag were beyond compare!  This event has definitely became a favorite and will definitely be on the to-do list every year!
